I have always held an inexplicable love for Bonfire Night. I have fond memories of standing out in the cold, watching fireworks in the garden, then being pressed up against the window indoors to watch the neighbours setting off theirs. Imagine my delight when I moved to Sussex and heard it was a big thing here. Imagine my further delight when I realised it was not just a night, but a whole season.
For a while, I was content to watch, but I was soon drawn in by the noise, the light, the costumes and spectacle of it all and knew I had to join a society. I am thankful I did, because I now get to spend a big chunk of time lighting up the streets of Sussex and carrying on a local tradition – all whilst raising money for charity – in the presence of the friends I have made along the way. Now I would like to give back a bit more and help Chiddingly Parish Bonfire Society burn brighter. Loyaulté Me Lie!
